Ellen Hopkins has written lots of books but this is my first by her. Flipping through the pages of some of her other books, they look like they're written in the same style. I really like it!
I'm not giving any spoilers by saying this book is about 3 main characters, all in a rehab facility for attempting suicide. Conner tried to shoot himself, Tony tried to OD with pills and an alcohol chaser, and Vanessa cut her wrists.
Gritty, harsh, and completely believable. Unfortunately, I have seen enough of the 'real world' to know that these 3 kids are very common in their extremes. The demons are real.
If I come across another of Ellen Hopkins' books that has a character I relate to one-on-one, I'll read it. Otherwise, I don't think I'd pick up another one. I liked the book a lot but I guess I've been blessed with not living through what these characters did. I can see it really appealing to some teenagers. It breaks my heart to know so many kids that would completely relate. I hope reading about Conner, Tony, and Vanessa will help those kids understand their painful journeys.
Read any good books lately?
I read more than just classic novels. This is where I post about recent books I have read. Have you read the same book? Got a different opinion? Let me know! I'd love to hear about it.
